Agartala: Tripura is expecting to get its all new inland
waterway connectivity service soon. Speaking to reporters at the civil
secretariat here this evening, Tripura Transport Secretary Kishore
Ambuly said that RITES, a Government of India enterprise operating under
the Railway Ministry, has submitted a draft Detailed Project report
(DPR) for introducing inland waterway connectivity in the state.
RITEs was asked to conduct a feasibility study and submit a DPR for starting inland waterways connectivity inside the state. The draft proposal submitted to the government recently is currently being scrutinized by the Department, the official said.
“We shall forward the proposal after proper scrutiny to the Minister for DoNER”, said Ambuly. River Gomati and River Howrah have been involved in the proposal’s plan.
Asked about possible routes of connectivity considered in the proposal, Transport Secretary Ambuly said that the proposal has suggested connecting Bangladesh inland river-ways with Tripura’s prospective inland waterway connectivity. “A good and alternative communication route can be established and the pressure of vehicles on the roads of Tripura would be lessened a lot if this project comes along”, he said. The official also said that the proposal submitted RITES has got adequate provisions for regular dredging and condnucting other renovation drives for ensuring the concerned rivers navigable. River Howrah has long been in discussion for its ever drying flow and River Gomati remains mostly dry for 6 months of the year. There are attempts to ensure perennial water flow in these rivers, Ambuly said.
